THE CHORUS OF WESTERLY APPOINTS ANDREW HOWELL
AS ITS SECOND MUSIC DIRECTOR
By unanimous decision, the Board of Directors of the Chorus of Westerly has
appointed Andrew Howell as the acclaimed music ensemble's second music director.
Howell, a former child and teenage member of the Chorus of Westerly, will
succeed founding music director George Kent beginning on July 1, 2012. Kent
is retiring from the Chorus in June after 53 seasons as music director.
A native of Rhode Island, Howell is currently on the faculty of the University
of Rhode Island's Department of Music and serves as director of the URI University
Chorus. Howell is also organist and choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Church
in New London, Connecticut, where he directs the adult choir, the choral scholars
program, and the Music at St. James Concert Series. During the summer months,
Howell serves as music director and organist at the Watch Hill Chapel. In
2009, Howell founded the Eastern Connecticut Children's Chorus with Francis
Ferrall for children ages 8 to 16.
Howell will become music director officially on July 1, 2012 and will begin
conducting rehearsals and concerts for the Chorus beginning in the September
of 2012 as the Chorus of Westerly begins its 54th concert season. Howell's
title until that time will be Music Director Designate. Kent will continue
as music director of the Chorus of Westerly through Summer Pops 2012 scheduled
to take place June 23, 2012 (with rain dates June 24 and June 25). Kent's
final Chorus concert will be Summer Pops and his final regular season indoor
concert (in Kent Hall) will be two performances of the Brahms Requiem on May
20, 2012. Tickets for the Brahms performance are available at chorusofwesterly.org.

Choral Workshop with Philip Lawson, SATURDAY, May 19
Music from Renaissance Spain & Portugal--Baritone Philip Lawson of The
King's Singers will lead a day-long choral workshop on Renaissance Spanish
and Portuguese repertoire on Saturday, May 19 at First Church in Cambridge.
The workshop sponsors are First Church and Night Song, the weekly compline
liturgy at the church.
The two sessions of the full day program include a three-hour morning session
on repertoire and choral techniques open to all in the choral community and
an afternoon masterclass for established ensembles which is open to the public.
Lawson's extensive experience with this repertoire will focus on these topics
for workshop discussion:
* geographical pronunciation versus general "Church" Latin
* use of modern editions or facsimiles; editorial choices
* issues of tuning and temperament
* diction in various accoustical settings
* part assignments
and other performance issues which impact interpretation.
Repertoire used in the morning session open to all will include the following
works by Victoria, Morales, Guerrero and Lobo:
* Victoria's Sanctus a6 & Agnus Dei a6 from Officium Defunctorum
* Morales' Benedictus a5 from Missa pro Defunctis
* Guerrero's motet Antes que comáis a Dios a4
* Settings of Versa est in luctum by Victoria & Lobo
Following a lunch break, the afternoon session will offer masterclass performances
by well-known local choral ensembles who will be coached on issues addressing
interpretation, technique and performance.
Baritone Philip Lawson, a member of The King's Singers for nearly two decades,
sang his last concert with this renowned ensemble earlier this year. He has
turned his musical attention to composition, a cappella arranging and coaching
choral ensembles. During his tenure with The King's Singers, Lawson sang in
nearly 2000 concert performances on four continents, made 25 CD and DVD recordings
and won the 2009 Grammy for the CD "Simple Gifts." He has long been
involved as a teacher and vocal coach, leading over 300 masterclasses and
workshops around the world, including universities here in the US and a residency
at the Royal College of Music. His own choral works and a cappella arrangements
have been performed by The King's Singers, and have been published in the
US and abroad. This May workshop will be Lawson's first program in the Boston
area.
The workshop fees are $40 for morning participants and $150 for ensembles
performing in the afternoon masterclass. Registrants from the morning session
are invited to audit the afternoon masterclass for free; afternoon-only auditors
pay $10. For further information, visit http://www.nightsong.org or call Daryl
Bichel, 617/312-8328.
Night Song offers a unique compline liturgy blending Renaissance polyphony,
Gregorian chant, and contemplative modal improvisations by jazz instrumentalists.
Night Song's three vocal ensembles -- mixed octet, mixed quintet, and men's
ensemble -- alternate weekly throughout the year at First Church in Cambridge.
In addition to music, Night Song's compline liturgy uses candles, icons, and
incense to create a setting to experience the divine in this world.
