St. Olaf Choir on Tour - February 3 & 4

The St. Olaf Choir, with 75 mixed voices, is the pioneer a cappella choir in the United States. For nearly a century, the choir has set a standard of choral excellence and remained at the forefront of choral artistry. Conducted since 1990 by Anton Armstrong, the St. Olaf Choir continues to develop the tradition that originated with its founder, F. Melius Christiansen. Their tour brings them to Worcester and New Haven, appearing on Wednesday, February 3, 7:30 pm at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts and on Thursday, February 4, 7:30 p.m. at Battell Chapel, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut - http://www.stolaf.edu/music/stolaf_choir/

Joshua Jacobson residency at RIC

On Friday, March 5th, the RIC Chorus, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorus, and Men’s Chorus will present a concert culminating the brief residency of guest composer/conductor Joshua Jacobson at Rhode Island College. During this residency, he will work with the RIC Chorus, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorus (all conducted by Teresa Coffman), and Men’s Chorus, and the concert will include his some of his arrangements and recommendations of Jewish choral music. Joshua R. Jacobson, founder and director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, holds a Bachelors degree in Music from Harvard College, a Masters in Choral Conducting from the New England Conservatory, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati. He is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Northeastern University, where he served for nine years as Chairman of the Department of Music, and currently as the Stotsky Professor of Jewish Studies. The West Bay Chorale is beginning its 2010 Season on February 1st, and welcomes new members who like to sing. This Spring we will be singing Jazz, Pops, and Sacred music,
including selections from West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Duke Ellington, and Steven Sondheim. Rehearsals are Monday nights at 7 PM, at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Rd. (near Hoxie 4 corners) in Warwick. We will be welcoming new members until February

North Kingstown Community Chorus

The Chorus of East Providence (www.chorusofep.org) will hold open rehearsals starting on Tuesday, January 12 at Martin Middle School in East Providence on Brown Ave. Rehearsals are from 7-9:30 on Tuesdays. The first 3 weeks are open to interested new singers. No auditions; all voice parts welcome. Program is called "Ragtime!" and features music from the Broadway musical, Ragtime, and songs by Irving Berlin. Concert on May 15. Newport County’s SWANHURST CHORUS, under the direction of Jonathan F. Babbitt, announces its 16th Annual Tribute to Broadway with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!”. Join us for the high-spirits, swirling skirts, flirting, laughing, and toe-tapping music. Held at Newport’s Fenner Hall, 15 Fenner Avenue, Swanhurst will offer seven dinner theater-style shows with intimate staging that places the audience in Aunt Eller’s front yard, surrounding them with song: March 6 - 7, 12 – 14, 19 & 20, 2010. Providence Singers: Mozart Requiem

VMA Arts and Cultural Center, Providence
Artistic director Andrew Clark leads the Providence Singers in a performance of Mozart final masterpiece plus works on memorial themes, including Benjamin Britten's "Cantata Misericordium (the Mercy Cantata)," commissioned to honor the International Red Cross, and Arvo Pärt's "Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten." The Rhode Island Children's Chorus, founded and directed by Christine Noel, joins the Providence Singers for Dan Locklair's "Stirring the Silence," a musical response to the events of September 11. The RICC also performs early composer Thomas Tallis' "Glory to Thee, My God This Night." With Bonnie Pomfret, soprano; Emily Marvosh, mezzo-soprano; Charles Blandy, tenor; David Kravitz, baritone.

~ An intense day of music for young male singers (tenor, baritone, bass), ranging from classics to a cappella-style singing and African drum-chant. With conductor-clinician Andrew Clark, artistic director of the Providence Singers, and the Rhode Island College Drum Circle.
Schedule:
1pm to7pm: Young Men's Workshop - participant fee of $10 covers music, tuition, and pizza-party expenses. Register by January 11, 2010 to guarantee your space. Late registrations and walk-ins will be accepted on a space-available basis.
7-8pm: Young Men's Concert - FREE and open to the public! featuring performances by the Young Men's Festival Chorus, the RIC Drum Circle, and select college a cappella groups.
